Description
The Mediterranean Sea Sponge represents the most ancient bathing tool known to humanity — predating the hammam itself. Harvested by free divers from the Eastern Mediterranean seabed at depths of 10–30 meters, each sponge is a living filter organism with a structure of thousands of microscopic channels, creating a lather-retaining capacity and gentleness that no synthetic material has ever replicated. In the Ottoman hammam, sea sponges were reserved for infants and those with sensitive or damaged skin — their softness was considered medicinal. The natural enzymes in sea sponge have a mild antibacterial property that inhibits mold and bacteria growth between uses.
Material & Origin
100% natural Spongia officinalis, harvested from the Eastern Mediterranean. Hand-cleaned and sun-dried. No bleach, no chemical treatment. Natural yellow-honey color. Size: medium (approx. 10cm diameter). Each sponge is unique in shape — variations are natural. Sustainably harvested — only mature sponges are taken, root is left for regrowth.
The Ritual
Saturate with warm water before first use. Squeeze several times to release any natural sea residue. Apply soap or hammam foam (kese) and work into a rich lather. Apply to body using gentle pressure. Rinse thoroughly after use. Store in a ventilated area, never in a sealed container. The sponge will last 6–12 months with proper care — far longer than any synthetic alternative.
