The Soak
Begin with 10–15 minutes of warm water immersion or steam. This is not optional — it is the foundation of the entire ritual. The pores must be open and the outer layer of skin sufficiently hydrated before the kese glove can work.
A hot bath, a long shower, or a steam room all work. The longer the soak, the more dramatic the exfoliation result. Do not rush this step.
“The hammam begins with water, not with tools. Patience is the first instrument.”
The Kese
The raw silk glove, worked from feet to shoulders in long, firm strokes. Within minutes, the visible rolling of dead skin confirms: this is real exfoliation. Nothing else compares.
Work each section of the body twice, with the second pass slightly lighter than the first. Cover every surface — the back of knees, the elbows, the décolletage.
The Cleanse
Natural loofah or sea sponge with ancient Aleppo soap. On freshly exfoliated skin, the lather penetrates differently. The clean goes deeper than you have ever experienced.
The soap will penetrate differently on freshly exfoliated skin — you will notice the lather is richer and the sensation more immediate.
The Rinse
Rinse with water that is slightly cooler than your shower or bath temperature. This temperature differential helps close the pores and lock in moisture. Avoid towel-rubbing — pat dry, or wrap in your peshtemal and allow it to absorb passively.
The Rest
If time permits, rest wrapped in your peshtemal for 5–10 minutes. In a traditional hammam, this is the köşk — the cool resting room where the body re-equilibrates. Even at home, this brief rest allows the skin to settle into its new state before you apply any product.
