Description
The peshtemal is not a towel. It is the original hammam textile — the flat-woven cotton cloth that Ottoman bathers wrapped around themselves between the steam room and the massage table for centuries. Unlike modern terry cloth towels, the peshtemal is woven flat, which makes it extraordinarily lightweight, fast-drying, and compact. It absorbs moisture on contact but releases it within minutes in open air, making it perfect for travel, beach, yoga, and home bathroom use simultaneously. Our peshtemal is hand-loomed on a traditional wooden shuttle loom by artisan weavers in Buldan, a weaving town in Turkey’s Aegean interior that has produced peshtemals without interruption since the 17th century.
Material & Origin
100% hand-loomed Aegean cotton, long-staple variety for maximum softness and durability. Woven on traditional wooden shuttle looms in Buldan, Denizli, Turkey. Dimensions: 90cm × 175cm. Weight: 280g. Fringe hand-knotted at both ends. Available in Natural Ivory (undyed) and Slate Grey (natural mineral dye). Machine washable at 40°C, becomes softer with each wash.
The Ritual
After your hammam ritual, wrap the peshtemal around your body and allow it to absorb moisture passively — do not rub, as the flat weave draws moisture away from the skin naturally. Shake out and hang on a hook or towel rail to dry. In a ventilated bathroom, it will be fully dry in under 30 minutes. Pack it flat in a bag for travel — it takes no more space than a folded t-shirt.
